Youth Promoting Peace Building through peaceful conflict resolution in the Horn of Africa
Project goals and objectives
The overall goal of the project is to contribute to replacing the state war in the Horn of Africa with peace and stability. The immediate objectives are to build the capacity of members of the Greater Horn of Africa Youth in Action organisation to become able to develop and implement local activities and projects focusing on peace building through dialogue and non-violent conflict resolution in their war-torn region.
The project will be implemented in Nairobi, Kenya.
Project target group
Youth from the greater Horn of Africa are the target group with special focus on youth with leadership potentials and visions from Somalia, Sudan and Ethiopia.
Description of the project
The capacity building of the members of the GREYAHA organisation will be done through the training of trainers’ capacity building seminar and follow up workshop. The trainees will be required to then trainer their peer and new younger members of the organisation.
The GREHAYA
The GREHAYA is newly founded non political, non-profit and non-governmental youth organization. CREHAYA is based in Nairobi and is composed of a network of youth leaders from Somalia, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Sudan, Uganda and Kenya. The core members who are behind the initiative were trained by Crossing Borders in Kampala. Hence, the initiators of the GREHAYA are implementing the plan of action that was agreed by the participants of the Kampala meeting. This meeting was attended by the Sudanese Minister of Higher Education and Sciences Dr. Peter Adwok and the South Sudan Representative to the EU Ms. Keni Nyba.
GREHAYA aims to increase and strengthen youth participation in the search for peace and stability in the Horn of Africa by educating and training youth in conflict resolution, dialogue and peace building based on the needs of the local community.
GREHAYA emphasis is on raising community capacity to prevent child and youth rights abuse in conflict situations and to stop youth from being recruited to armed conflicts, violence and/or piracy and other illegal activities in the turmoil plagued states, particularly Somalia and Sudan.
Toward these objectives, the GREYAHA intend to recruit, train and build the capacity of youth in raising their awareness in finding peaceful and legal options to self realisation through the use of the online media as a means for information sharing, education, conflict resolution, networking and awareness raising.
As a young organization GREYAHA is in continuously development and still seeks to build its organisational capacity and expertise in peace building, advocacy, communication, organizational work and networking. Therefore, GREYAHA has approached Crossing Borders to continue supporting the development of the new organisation.
Partnership with the GREHAYA
The partnership between Crossing Borders and the GREHAYA started in 2008 when the latter requested Crossing Borders to help raise funds and organise a training seminar in Kampala for a group of 22 youth leaders from the Horn. In response to this, Crossing Borders applied to UNESCO Participation Programme through the Danish National commission for UNESCO. The application was approved for CB to implement the training seminar in Kampala. The leading members of the GREHAYA were among the trainees. Science then, Crossing Borders has been in direct communication and exchange with the GREHAYA.
Therefore, we find it natural to support the noble efforts of this young organisation, which appears to be the first of its kind in the Horn. Crossing Borders’ support will primarily be in the form of assisting the GREHAYA to design and implement the training of trainers’ course and workshop for members of GREHAYA to take active part in the search for sustainable resolution of the crises in the Horn of Africa region.
Methodology and Approaches
The method will be based on the principles of respect, open dialogue and target group oriented. The level of the activities will take its point of departure from the needs, interest and aspirations of the target group. Respect for basic fundamental human rights, participatory democracy and transparency will be the guiding light of the project activities.
